Original Guitar World Guitar Buyer’s Guide 1998–99, produced from the editors of Guitar World. This is a substantial specialist buyer’s guide devoted to guitars, amplification, effects, accessories and related equipment, with the cover advertising over 3,000 products and photographs.

The magazine is aimed squarely at guitar players, collectors and musicians researching late-1990s equipment, making it a particularly interesting period reference for the guitar market of the era.

The striking front cover features a model holding a red Gretsch hollow-body electric guitar, with the publication describing itself as “The World’s Best-Selling Guitar Buyer’s Guide.”

Main Sections

The contents divide the guide into major equipment categories, including:

  • Electric Guitars – page 19
Extensive listings covering solid-body and hollow-body instruments.

  • Acoustic Guitars – page 65
A broad selection of acoustic instruments available during the period.

  • Amplifiers – page 95
Combos, stacks and other guitar amplification equipment.

  • Bass Guitars – page 139
    Dedicated directory of bass instruments.

  • Effects – page 163
Pedals, distortion, fuzz and other guitar effects.

  • Sound Reinforcement – page 191
PA systems, microphones, mixers and associated live-sound equipment.

  • Pickups, Parts & Accessories – page 199
Guitar-related components, accessories and specialist equipment.

This makes the magazine a useful snapshot of the 1998–99 guitar and music-equipment market, with photographs and listings covering numerous brands and product types.

Guitar Equipment & Collecting Interest

The photographs show a broad mixture of instruments throughout the guide, including:

  • Hollow-body and semi-hollow electric guitars
  • Solid-body electrics
  • Acoustic guitars
  • Bass guitars
  • Guitar amplifiers
  • Effects units
  • Pickups
  • Accessories
  • PA and sound-reinforcement equipment

For collectors of vintage catalogues and music magazines, it provides a particularly useful visual reference to models, designs and equipment being marketed at the end of the 1990s.

Original Pin-Up Centerfold – PRESENT

The front cover specifically advertises a “Bonus! Pin-Up Centerfold!!”, and this feature is clearly present in the supplied photographs.

The attached fold-out centre section uses a bright yellow background and features a blonde model posing alongside guitar equipment. One side shows her with a distinctive angular Flying V-style guitar and small combo amplifier, while the opposite spread shows her holding a large red Gretsch hollow-body guitar, matching the guitar used on the front cover.

The imagery is very much in the colourful late-1990s Guitar World promotional style and makes this copy more interesting than examples where the original centre section has been removed.

The centre feature shown in the photographs is included with this magazine.

Condition

Pre-owned vintage condition.

From close inspection of the supplied photographs:

  • Front cover remains bright and strongly coloured.
  • Main cover artwork and lettering remain clear.
  • There is visible edge and corner wear, particularly around the outer corners.
  • Some light creasing / waviness is visible to the cover from age and handling.
  • Small areas of rubbing and surface wear are visible.
  • Bottom edge and corners show minor storage wear.
  • Spine appears intact, with expected light vintage wear.
  • Interior pages shown remain clean and highly readable.
  • Centre pages remain attached and open correctly.
  • The fold-out centre feature shows normal fold lines as expected from its original construction.
  • Some light age-related handling marks may be present throughout.
