Original Max Power Magazine – August 1996, from the height of the UK’s 1990s modified-car and tuning scene. This issue is packed with period performance builds, custom bodywork, turbocharged cars, ICE installations, technical features, motorsport and buying advice.

The cover is dominated by a bright yellow modified Peugeot 306, promoted with the large “SCORCHER!” headline and a feature on a Dimma 306. The magazine strongly reflects the Max Power style of the era, with bold custom cars, wide-body conversions, extreme audio installations and highly modified road cars throughout.

Main Cover Feature – Peugeot 306 Dimma

The principal feature is a yellow Peugeot 306 Dimma, shown both on the front cover and across the opening contents spread.

The car features:

  • Bright yellow paintwork
  • Wide-body Dimma-style appearance
  • Deep-dish alloy wheels
  • Lowered stance
  • Modified front bumper and body styling
  • Distinctive period 1990s tuning aesthetic

The contents spread gives the car a large full-width image and makes it clear that this is the principal cover story.

Other Featured Cars

The photographed contents pages show a particularly strong selection of modified 1990s cars, including:

  • Sapphire Cosworth
  • Ford Escort / Cosworth-related feature
  • Two Renault 5 GT Turbos
  • Mazda 323
  • Ford Fiesta
  • Rieger BMW 5 Series
  • VW Polo G40
  • Cavalier Turbo
  • Golf G60
  • Metro GTi
  • Readers’ modified cars
  • Various ICE demonstration vehicles

One image shows two brightly coloured Renault 5 GT Turbos, while other photographs include extensively modified European hatchbacks and saloons typical of the period.

Cosworth Feature

The cover also highlights “COSSEMOD” and references a 360bhp Sapphire Cosworth, making Ford Cosworth content another major attraction in this issue.

This will be especially interesting to collectors of:

  • Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth
  • 1990s Ford tuning
  • Retro performance cars
  • Modified-car magazines
  • Period aftermarket tuning culture

ICE / Car Audio

A substantial part of this issue is devoted to in-car entertainment and custom audio.

Visible features include:

  • ICE Cable Mega Test
  • ICE system installation articles
  • Custom boot installations
  • Amplifier and speaker equipment
  • High-output sound systems
  • Technical audio features

One photographed spread shows an elaborate ICE install with amplifiers and custom equipment, perfectly illustrating the extreme car-audio culture Max Power became famous for.

Buying & Technical Features

The photographed contents also reveal a wide mix of practical and technical articles, including:

  • Metro GTi Buying Guide
  • ICE Mega Guide
  • Power Surgery
  • Performance information
  • Car modification advice
  • Security testing
  • Product and equipment reviews
  • Motorsport coverage
  • Readers’ cars

There is also a feature on a distinctive yellow custom Ford Anglia, shown across a colourful multi-page spread, adding further variety beyond the more familiar hot hatches and turbo cars.
