Original Max Power Magazine – September 1998, Issue 65, from the peak era of the UK modified-car, tuning and ICE scene.

This is a magazine rather than a book, despite the note in the instructions. The issue is clearly dated September 1998 on the front cover and identified internally as Issue 65.

The striking cover features the bright yellow “ZX Files” feature car, photographed dramatically from above, with the cover line “The truth is in here…”. Inside, the cover story continues with a large double-page opening spread showing the yellow custom car in action, described as Strosek’s 260bhp UFO.

This is a particularly strong period issue for collectors of late-1990s modified-car culture, Max Power memorabilia, retro tuning, hot hatches and classic performance cars.

Featured Cars & Tuning Content

The photographed contents pages show a substantial selection of modified and performance cars, including:

  • Nitroused Polo VR6 – heavily modified Polo running a VR6 engine with nitrous
  • Honda Civic Type-R – coverage of the performance Civic
  • Rover ICE Car – audio and in-car entertainment installation
  • Orange Ford Escort RS Turbo – brightly finished modified RS Turbo
  • Citroën Saxo – custom styling and tuning feature
  • 2.0-Litre Vauxhall Nova – extensively modified Nova with strong performance focus
  • Prelude ICE Car – major in-car audio installation
  • Ford Fiesta Cosworth 4x4
  • Hyundai Coupe
  • Audi A4
  • Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk2 – very low modified Mk2 Golf
  • Reader cars and additional modified vehicles throughout

The issue also contains a substantial Mk2 Golf tuning and styling guide, making it of particular interest to Volkswagen and retro VW enthusiasts.

Wheels & Styling

The cover advertises “1998’s Hottest Alloys”, with the magazine containing a large wheel guide featuring period alloy-wheel designs and styling trends from the late 1990s.

For anyone restoring or recreating an authentic late-'90s modified car, magazines like this are excellent period references for:

  • Alloy wheel styles
  • Bodykits
  • Lowering trends
  • ICE/audio installations
  • Paint colours
  • Interior modifications
  • Engine conversions
  • Nitrous installations
  • Period tuning companies and products

ICE / In-Car Entertainment

As expected from Max Power of this era, the issue contains plenty of ICE and audio-related material, including dedicated feature cars and installations.

The contents specifically reference the Prelude ICE Car, a Rover ICE Car, entertainment products and other late-1990s audio equipment.

Additional Features

Other photographed contents include:

  • Road Rage feature
  • Maid In Heaven

Condition

Pre-owned vintage condition with visible age and handling wear. Please study all supplied photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.

The front cover remains bright and colourful, with the main artwork and text clearly presented. There is, however, noticeable general surface wear from age and storage.

Visible condition points include:

  • Rubbing and wear along the spine
  • Creasing and handling wear around the lower-left/spine area
  • Small scuffs and marks around the cover edges
  • Minor corner wear
  • Light surface scratches and handling marks
  • Some small creases along the outer edges
  • General age-related wear to the glossy cover
  • Slight waviness/curling consistent with storage and use

The spine remains attached, although it shows noticeable rubbing and wear, particularly towards the lower end.

The internal pages shown appear generally clean, colourful and readable, with normal age-related handling wear. The centre/opening pages show some natural curvature from the binding but appear intact in the photographed areas.

The rear cover shows light surface marking, edge wear and rubbing, with more visible wear towards the spine and lower corner.

Overall, this is a genuine used 1998 magazine, not a pristine/new copy, but it remains an attractive example for a Max Power collector or enthusiast of the 1990s modified-car scene.
