Original Melody Maker music magazine/newspaper dated 21 March 1998, Issue 12, Volume 75.

This is a strong late-1990s UK music issue with The Bluetones as the main cover feature. The front cover carries the large headline “The Bluetones hit the jackpot!”, with additional cover text promoting stories about Radiohead, Charlatans, Cornershop, the Garbage album and tour, and a Festivals ’98 full round-up.

The contents page confirms a substantial Bluetones feature on pages 28–29, described as a look at the band around the release of Return to the Last Chance Saloon, with the feature centred on Mark Morriss and the group’s characteristic humour and rock ’n’ roll image.

Other clearly advertised features include Danni Minogue, with coverage tied to her favourite tunes; Deftones, under a punchy feature about the band’s music and live reputation; and Pop Turns 30, a retrospective on major pop stars from the previous three decades, with Kylie Minogue referenced prominently.

There is also an U2 feature, presented as “We Join Bono and co in Australia”, with the issue promising a broader look at the band during that period.

The issue also includes coverage of:
Radiohead, Charlatans, Cornershop, Garbage, U2, Deftones, Mark & Lard, Warm Jets, James, Danni Minogue, Killah Priest, Bernard Butler, Saint Etienne, Travis, Finley Quaye, Dust Junkys, Kristin Hersh, Backstreet Boys and numerous other artists.

The photographed contents page also shows the magazine’s usual extensive mix of news, reviews, singles, albums, charts, live reports, gig listings, music-industry features and reader sections, making this a very representative snapshot of the UK alternative, indie, rock and pop scene in early 1998.

Condition

Pre-owned vintage condition with general age and handling wear.

From the photographs, the front cover remains complete and presents well overall, but there is visible wear consistent with a newspaper-format music publication of this age.

Condition points visible include:

  • General edge wear and softening around the outer margins.
  • Noticeable creasing and rippling to the paper, particularly around the lower and side edges.
  • Some light corner wear and minor folding.
  • General surface handling marks and light age-related wear.
  • The newspaper edges show some roughness and waviness.
  • Interior pages show light creasing, edge wear and age-related toning, particularly around the page margins.
  • No obvious large missing section is visible in the supplied images.

The pages shown remain clear, readable and well-presented, with strong colour reproduction on the cover and interior contents page.

Please study all supplied photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
