Original NME Magazine / New Musical Express dated 15 November 1997, with Metallica as the major front-cover feature.
The cover features a large full-band photograph beneath the emphatic headline:
“EXCLUSIVE! GET A LOAD OF THIS! METALLICA”
with the accompanying strapline:
“THE BAND THAT DESTROYED HEAVY METAL – THEIR DEFINITIVE STORY”
This makes the issue particularly interesting for collectors of Metallica, heavy metal, alternative rock and 1990s NME memorabilia, as the magazine presents the band as its dominant feature rather than simply giving them a small news mention.
The upper part of the cover also promotes several substantial contemporary music stories:
- Black Grape – promoted under “The Higher Brigade!”, with further stories relating to the band.
- Placebo – featured alongside The Seahorses, with the cover line “Praise The Lard!”
- The Chemical Brothers
- Additional NME coverage and new-band material.
The bottom cover strip confirms an especially varied issue, featuring:
- Pulp
- Rakim
- Björk
- David Arnold & John Barry
- Speed Garage
- Space
- Mogwai
- Jane’s Addiction
The cover also references a feature concerning a former member of R.E.M.
Overall, this is a strong late-1997 issue spanning heavy metal, Britpop, indie, alternative rock, electronic music and hip-hop, with Metallica commanding the principal cover story and a particularly broad supporting line-up of important 1990s artists.

Condition
Pre-owned vintage condition with noticeable handling, storage and edge damage visible in the supplied photograph.
The front cover shows several prominent horizontal creases/fold lines running across the magazine, including through the Metallica photograph and headline area. There is also general surface wrinkling and rippling consistent with repeated handling and storage.
The left-hand edge/spine area shows visible compression, creasing and general wear.
The right-hand edge is slightly uneven and wavy, with some roughness/fraying to the newspaper-style paper.
The most noticeable defect is at the bottom-right corner, which has a substantial folded/creased and torn-looking area with the paper turned over and visibly damaged. This corner wear is significantly heavier than elsewhere on the cover.
The bottom edge also shows creasing, waviness and general handling wear, while the lower-left corner is softened.
There is some age-related toning/discolouration to the pale outer margins together with minor marks and general surface wear.
The cover photograph and printed text remain clear and readable despite the visible wear.
Condition assessment is based on the single supplied image, so the interior pages and back cover cannot be fully assessed.
