Original NME Magazine dated 19 October 1996, with Suede as the main front-cover feature and Brett Anderson prominently pictured.
The main cover story is headed:
“GLAMOUR OF THE GODS! SUEDE”
with the subheading:
“get back in the spotlight”
The cover has a strong mid-1990s alternative/Britpop feel and is particularly relevant to collectors of Suede, Brett Anderson, Britpop and 1990s NME memorabilia.
The front cover also promotes a wide range of other contemporary artists and features, including:
- Kula Shaker
- PJ Harvey
- Ocean Colour Scene
- The Beautiful South
- dEUS
- Reef
- CJ Bolland
- Beth Orton
- Chuck D
- Babybird
A top-cover headline also promotes an R.E.M. / U2 collaboration, which is expanded upon in the supplied interior image.
The interior page is led by the large headline:
“REM and U2 get on ‘One’”
and includes a substantial photograph showing members of R.E.M. and U2 together. The article discusses a charity recording involving the two major bands, making this issue especially interesting for collectors of either group.
The same page also includes a large feature titled:
“Garbage & Tricky: longlife friends”
with coverage of Garbage, Shirley Manson and Tricky, accompanied by photographs.
There is also a separate box feature concerning Shaun Ryder, adding further 1990s alternative and dance/indie interest to the issue.
Overall, this is a strong period issue representing the 1996 UK alternative, Britpop, indie and electronic music scene, with a particularly good mix of Suede, R.E.M., U2, Garbage, Tricky, PJ Harvey and Kula Shaker-related content.
