Original NME Magazine dated 9 January 1999, with Idlewild as the main front-cover feature.
The front cover is dominated by a live photograph of Roddy Woomble performing with a microphone, accompanied by the bold headline:
“THE GREAT RIOT HOPES – IDLEWILD”
and the additional wording:
“CRAZY BATTLE THIS”
The cover also promotes NME’s UK gig guide, making this a very strong live-music themed issue from the beginning of 1999.
Other major names clearly featured on the cover include:
- Stereophonics
- Beastie Boys
- Ocean Colour Scene
- Steps
- Marilyn Manson
- Mansun
- The Fall
- Lo-Fidelity Allstars
The supplied interior image shows the News section and adds a substantial amount of useful collector interest.
A large lead story titled:
“LOOKING GOOD!”
features Kelly Jones of Stereophonics performing with guitar. The accompanying article discusses the band’s new single and tour activity, tying directly into the tour information promoted on the cover.
Also visible is:
- Beastie Boys – British tour announcement under the headline “HELLO BOYS!”
- Kula Shaker – feature discussing the band and “Mystical Machine Gun”
- Ocean Colour Scene – news relating to new material and touring under the heading “DIGGING THE LATEST SCENE”
- A top news reference to Ian Brown
- A separate top news reference to The Levellers
This gives the issue a strong late-1990s mix of indie, alternative rock, Britpop and hip-hop, with a particularly strong emphasis on live dates, touring and new releases.
It is a very representative NME issue from early 1999, with Idlewild on the cover and major contemporary coverage of Stereophonics, Beastie Boys, Kula Shaker and Ocean Colour Scene.
