Original UNCUT Magazine – Take 9, February 1998, a substantial late-1990s British music and film magazine featuring Ian Brown prominently on the cover and a major retrospective on The Stone Roses.

The cover headline reads “There Were Too Many Drugs – The Rise and Fall of The Stone Roses by Ian Brown”, making this a particularly strong issue for collectors of The Stone Roses, Ian Brown, Manchester music and 1990s British indie culture.

The front cover also promotes a significant Noel Gallagher feature under the headline “No Roses, No Oasis”, alongside coverage of Shaun Ryder, Natalie Imbruglia, Manic Street Preachers, Ry Cooder, Wim Wenders, Boogie Nights, Paul Verhoeven and other major music and film subjects.

Magazine Contents & Features

From the photographed contents page, notable articles include:

  • Ian Brown / The Stone Roses – major feature looking back at the band and its history.
  • Noel Gallagher – discussion of why there might have been no Oasis without The Stone Roses.
  • Shaun Ryder – covering new projects, drugs, the demise of Happy Mondays and the rise of Black Grape.
  • Manic Street Preachers – archive material and an early interview.
  • Natalie Imbruglia – Q&A feature.
  • Performance – extensive feature about the controversial classic British film starring Mick Jagger and James Fox.
  • Boogie Nights – feature looking at the 1970s adult-film industry backdrop of the film.
  • Ry Cooder & Wim Wenders – discussing their collaboration and Paris, Texas.
  • Paul Verhoeven – feature on the director of Starship Troopers.
  • New York Babylon – retrospective look at 1970s New York.
  • Film coverage including Titanic, Boogie Nights, The End of Violence, Resurrection Man and Tomorrow Never Dies.
  • Music reviews including material connected with The High Llamas, Ian Brown, Keith Richards, Mark Hollis, Isaac Hayes and others.
  • Book reviews and features covering Nick Drake, Shaun Ryder, Hong Kong cinema and The Byrds.

The issue is a great snapshot of British alternative music and film culture at the end of the 1990s, with a particularly heavy emphasis on Manchester artists and influential British rock.

The Cover

The front cover is dominated by a striking portrait of Ian Brown, with the large yellow UNCUT masthead above him. Smaller cover references include Noel Gallagher, vintage New York Babylon imagery and the magazine's Performance feature.

The rear cover carries a period Maxell advertisement featuring Resurrection Man, which also adds to the late-1990s period character of the magazine.
